Thank you so much for taking the time to read about a new and exciting ministry opportunity that God has opened up for me. I’m thrilled to share what He’s doing in my life—and how you might be a part of it.

The Spiritual Climate & the Influence of Sport

While the spiritual climate in our culture continues to decline, the influence of sport is only growing. Consider these statistics:

  • 86% of Canadian youth participate in sport
  • 75% of men and 50% of women consider themselves sports fans

This presents a powerful opportunity to reach people with the gospel—right in the center of where they already are: the world of athletics.

My Journey to This Calling

As a former collegiate athlete, I experienced firsthand the life-changing power of sports ministry. I was introduced to AIA during a time when I deeply needed community, guidance, and the presence of God. Through this ministry, I was mentored, discipled, and supported in ways that saved my life and shaped my calling.

Over the past few years, I’ve served as the chaplain for the men’s rugby team at Trinity Western University. It’s been a privilege to walk alongside young men in their faith journeys—leading small groups, engaging in one-on-one conversations, and witnessing some take the step of baptism! These moments have reminded me that the Holy Spirit is actively at work in the world of sport.

Now, I’m taking a bold step of faith. I’ve decided to move to a part-time role as Youth & Young Adults Pastor at Legacy Church, and dedicate the rest of my time to serve with Athletes in Action as a minister of the gospel through sport. I will be training as the assistant chaplain for the BC Lions under the mentorship and guidance of Dave Klassen. My training will also continue as I serve other elite and pro athletes in the Lower Mainland and beyond.

My role with AIA will include continuing to serve the TWU rugby team while also receiving training and experience to grow as a chaplain within the elite and professional sports world.

Why This Ministry Matters

Athletes often lack access to Christian community due to the demands of their schedules, frequent travel, and the culture of sport. Many are new to the area and disconnected from a local church. Chaplaincy offers a crucial opportunity to come alongside them — to share the hope of Jesus and disciple those isolated from local fellowship.

This is where I sense God calling me: to walk with these athletes, support them spiritually, and meet them where they are with the love and truth of Christ.

Partner With Me

To begin this next step, I’m building a Ministry Partnership Team—a group of individuals, churches, and families who will stand with me in prayer, encouragement, and financial support.

My initial goal is to raise $2,500 per month. Would you prayerfully consider joining my support team? Your partnership will directly help me respond to God’s leading and minister through Athletes in Action.

What You Can Expect

If you choose to support me financially, I’ll keep you updated regularly through newsletters that share stories of how God is working in the lives of athletes. I would also love the chance to connect with you in person, if possible.

All donations are tax-deductible and processed through Power to Change, the ministry under which AIA operates. You can set up monthly giving or give once at this link: https://p2c.sh/shakafonderson. If you'd like more information on Power to Change or how to give, I’d be happy to provide the details.

I deeply value your partnership and friendship. Thank you again for considering how you might join me in reaching the world of athletics for Christ.

God bless you,
Shaka Fonderson
