Summer Psalms - On Psalm 31

August 2, 2022

Pray for Illumination - Heavenly Father, help me to know your ways; teach me your paths and lead me into your truth. Amen.

Read Psalm 31

I hate those who cling to worthless idols; as for me, I trust in the Lord.  Psalms 31:6

There are some “reality” TV shows that I really despise.  I only have to see the advertisement to know what kind of show it is – one that perpetuates and glorifies the love of self, sex, and money.  Doing anything and everything to get what they want, clinging to idols.  The reason I despise this type of entertainment so much is largely because I know the influence it has on so many people, creating fantasy scenarios that leave the viewers with a false sense of what a good life looks like.

I think this is the reason that David “hates” those that cling to idols.  They create a false sense that these idols are giving them the good life.  But it is important to notice that they are clinging to the idols.  This is because the idols have no power to hold on to them unlike the Lord who has the power to hold his people safe in His hands.

My times are in your hands  Psalms 31:15

The Lord is the one who clings to his people and therefore we can trust in him.  The words of verse 5 were echoed by Jesus and Stephen as they were taking their last breath: Into your hands I commit my spirit (31:5).   They knew that even in death, they could trust their lives to be safe in the hands of God!

Today, commit your life into the hands of God.  Ask the Lord to show you where you are clinging to idols and, with His help, let go and put your faith in Jesus Christ.

Love the Lord, all his faithful people! The Lord preserves those who are true to him, …. Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the Lord.  Psalms 31:23‭-‬24‬
