Summer Psalms - On Psalm 28

July 29, 2022

Pray for Illumination - Heavenly Father, help me to know your ways; teach me your paths and lead me into your truth. Amen.

Read Psalm 28

To you, Lord, I call    Psalm 28:1

When you need help, who do you call?  No, I don’t mean the Ghostbusters!  But we often can think of people we might call depending on what it is we need help with.  If I need help with an electrical problem, I might call one person, but a theological conundrum, maybe someone else.  Growing up I would often go to my dad for many how-to problems and I looked up to him for his strength.  But if I was hoping for a gracious response to a request or simple encouragement, I would always go to my mom for her gentle spirit.

Who are you going to call?  David answers that definitively.  In all things, he knows that he can go to the Lord who is his Rock (vs 1), his shield (vs 7), and a fortress of salvation (vs 8).  The Lord is his strength and the strength of His people.  But the Lord is also a shepherd (vs 9), a gentle hand that can “carry them forever”.

David describes himself as lifting up his hands to God.  Lifting up of hands is often a how we express our worship.  But it can also be an expression of dependency.  Whether you need strength to get you through, protection from harm, or a gentle hand to carry you along, lift your hands up to the Lord in prayer and listen for his voice.  Trust in the Lord and know Him to be God in your life.

Praise be to the Lord,
    for he has heard my cry for mercy.
The Lord is my strength and my shield;
    my heart trusts in him, and he helps me.
My heart leaps for joy,
    and with my song I praise him.
