The law of the Lord is perfect,
refreshing the soul.
The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy,
making wise the simple.
The precepts of the Lord are right,
giving joy to the heart.
The commands of the Lord are radiant,
giving light to the eyes. (Psalm 19:7-8)
Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect. (Matthew 5:48)
I feel blessed to live in one of the most beautiful areas of the world. In fact our tourism slogan is “Super. Natural. British Columbia.” There is something about the beauty and grandeur of our natural world that leads us to consider something bigger than ourselves – something super…natural. For some that might be “Mother Nature” or “The Universe”. For many it gives at least a pause to consider some benevolent creator behind such beauty and natural order. For Christians, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands” (Psalm 19:1). When we look at nature, in a sense, God is revealed to us through his handiwork. But David moves on in his Psalm to describe an even better revelation of the Lord – His Word. God’s Word goes beyond what the natural world can give us. It refreshes our soul. It makes us wise. It brings joy. And it gives light for the way. God’s Word is perfect – trustworthy – right – and radiant! This Psalm of David invites us to discover the beauty of God’s Word and his ways. We are invited to remember that everything God does is perfect. And his handiwork in creation can be a wonderful reminder that he wants to do an even greater masterpiece in us - his perfect work on our hearts.
Maybe the next time you see a beautiful mountain backdrop or wake-up to a warm sunrise, may you be inspired to remember that the Lord is performing His beautiful handiwork in your life as you learn to trust and obey Jesus. And why not let the scriptures be your sunrise in the morning and prayer give you the best view for your day!
Heavenly Father, will you do your beautiful work in my life? Help me to see the goodness of your ways and always trust in your Word. May my life declare your glory, clearer every day! Amen.
