Summer Psalms - On Psalm 35

August 6, 2022

Pray for Illumination - Heavenly Father, help me to know your ways; teach me your paths and lead me into your truth. Amen.

Read Psalm 35

Take up shield and armor; arise and come to my aid.  Psalm 35:2

A request is made by the Psalmist that God would come to his rescue and set everything right: that injustices would be made right and that he would be protected from those that would seek to harm him.  But above all that Lord would be worshipped.

One request that the Psalmist makes that has stuck with me as I read through the entire Psalm: Say to me, “I am your salvation.” (vs. 3).  Sometimes it is easy to forget how much we need the Lord! Today, I invite you to pray a simple prayer of confession, trusting in the Lord’s forgiveness and saving grace so that your life can speak of our wonderful Saviour:

Loving God,
I confess before you
that my life is not pure and holy
apart from the cleansing I have from the work of Christ.
And I confess that too often Christ in me is hidden by my actions
that wound rather than heal,
that tear down rather than build up.
Open my eyes,
that I may see you in the ones I say I love.
Open my ears,
that I may be quicker to listen than to speak.
Open my mouth
to speak good rather than evil of my neighbors.
Open my hands
in generosity and help me let go of clenched fists.
Open my hearts
to a desire to follow Jesus in full obedience
to your will and your way.
I pray trusting in your forgiveness and
in the power of your Holy Spirit to lead and guide me
in paths of justice and righteousness
for your name’s sake. Amen.

My tongue will proclaim your righteousness,
    your praises all day long.
