Summer Psalms - On Psalm 33

August 4, 2022

Pray for Illumination - Heavenly Father, help me to know your ways; teach me your paths and lead me into your truth. Amen.

Read Psalm 33

From heaven the Lord looks down and sees all mankind   Psalms 33:13‭‬

I enjoy watching basketball.  I love it more when I get to watch my daughter play.  As a basketball fan, I’m invested in watching the game but I am always keeping an eye on my daughter even when she is away from the ball, trying to gauge her actions, thoughts, and emotions.  As much as I think I know how she is feeling at any given moment, I really don’t know and there is very little I can do to help her, even if she wanted my help!

One of the themes that the Psalmist draws out in our reading today is that of God seeing, watching, and looking.

from his dwelling place he watches all who live on earth   Psalms 33:14

We worship the Lord who watches all of creation and sees all things, and we worship Him who keeps an eye on his children.  And so, even though you might feel insignificant at times, you have a Heavenly Father who watches over you with an intent interest in everything YOU!  But unlike my helpless vantage point in the bleachers, the Lord Almighty is active in helping his children along.

"Let not your heart be troubled," His tender word I hear,
And resting on His goodness, I lose my doubts and fears;
Though by the path He leadeth, but one step I may see;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

I sing because I'm happy,
I sing because I'm free,
For His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know He watches me.

“His eye is on the Sparrow”.  Written by: C D Martin, Charles Hutchison Gabriel

But the eyes of the Lord are on those who fear him, on those whose hope is in his unfailing love   Psalms 33:18
