Summer Psalms - On Psalm 32

August 3, 2022

Pray for Illumination - Heavenly Father, help me to know your ways; teach me your paths and lead me into your truth. Amen.

Read Psalm 32

Blessed is the one whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered.  Psalms 32:1

Guilt.  Nobody enjoys feeling guilty.  I learned the uncomfortable weight of guilt at a young age.  My mother had taken me with her to go grocery shopping and as we stood in line to pay, I noticed the yummy looking lollipops at eye level.  I asked my mom if she would buy me the candy.  She said no and that was that.  Well, I obviously didn’t agree because when she had her back to me, I snuck the candy into my pocket.  I couldn’t let anyone see me with the candy and so when we got home, I hid it under my pillow.  Then at night, when I thought my brother whom I shared a room with was asleep, I pulled out the candy and tried to unwrap it.  It was so noisy that my brother heard it and asked where I got the candy.  I had to lie!  First stealing.  Now lying!  Despite not getting caught, I never did enjoy that candy.  The guilt was so heavy that I couldn’t enjoy something that I otherwise would have loved.

When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy on me; my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer.  Psalms 32:3‭-‬4‬

I am happy that I learned the cost of sin and guilt at a young age because it has helped me to see the value of honesty and integrity and seeking forgiveness when I became aware of wrongdoing.

Forgiveness is such a beautiful gift that we have been given through Jesus Christ.  It is a gift that sets us free from the burden of guilt and shame.  Nothing is hidden from God anyways.  Why would I want to carry the weight of guilt when I can enjoy the beautiful gift of life free from it.  Thanks be to God!

Therefore let all the faithful pray to you while you may be found   Psalms 32:6
